THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER WONDERFUL SEASON

There is something very special about this time of year at Ocean Reef®. Friends begin returning, familiar faces appear again around the Club, calendars begin filling, and another wonderful Ocean Reef®season comes to life.

For me, it is also a reminder of how fortunate we are to call this extraordinary community home. After nearly four decades, I still look forward to each new season and all the friendships, traditions and memories that come with it.

This October there is so much to look forward to - from the magic and fun of Halloween to classic movies, golf, wonderful wine, time with friends and simply being together again at Ocean Reef®.

We count our blessings every day and look forward to making many more memories with all of you during the season ahead.

RICHARD WEINSTEIN REMEMBERS

Richard Weinstein recently looked back on the history of Mary Lee Presents and the marketing ideas that grew alongside Ocean Reef® . His recollection is the perfect place to begin because it documents how a very personal approach to real estate became part of a much larger Ocean Reef® story.

In 2011, Mary Lee Presents began introducing marketing ideas that had not previously been used by an Ocean Reef®  real-estate agent - including Burgee Bar check stuffers, an Ocean Reef Press insert, Fine Wine magazine advertising and a Fishing Village office designed to make the real-estate experience more welcoming.

That same period included helping bring the New York Athletic Club into the reciprocal-club program, creating the Reef Explorer for prospective-member tours by water, sharing marketing space with other brokers, and developing national advertising that complemented Ocean Reef Club®'s own membership efforts.

In 2012, Prudential Keyside Properties became Mary Lee Presents Ocean Reef Properties. In January 2014, the Club acquired the company and formed the Ocean Reef Club Real Estate Company. Years later, Mary returned to Sotheby's while keeping the one-of-a-kind personal identity that had defined her work from the beginning.

Richard's conclusion: the journey has always been about supporting , building Equity Membership with the right audience, and creating a better real-estate and membership experience for everyone.

Richard's memories are a wonderful reminder that my marketing has never been about simply placing an ad.

The next chapter continues that same philosophy: presenting today's listings beautifully, sharing the history and stories of Ocean Reef® discreetly connecting buyers and sellers, and using the traditions, events and friendships of Ocean Reef® to keep each communication personal and meaningful.

The goal remains what it has always been - to know Ocean Reef®, understand its members, and represent this very special community with warmth, knowledge and care.

What began as an opportunity to introduce Ocean Reef to some extraordinary Americans has grown into something we treasure deeply.

Over the years, members of the Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor communities have come to Ocean Reef not simply as guests, but as friends. They have played golf and fished with our members, joined us around dinner tables, shared their stories and introduced many of us to friendships we never could have imagined.

Each year, when we watch the SEALs parachute into Ocean Reef, it is spectacular. But for us, the most meaningful moments often happen afterward - around a table, on the golf course, on a fishing boat, or simply during a conversation between new friends.

It is about service and sacrifice. It is about gratitude. And increasingly, it is about friendship.

SAVA STORY OF SERVICE
JACK JACOBS

Many Ocean Reef members know Jack Jacobs first as a friend. This photograph captures that friendship beautifully - Jack enjoying a round of golf with Mike Smith, Gus Hillenbrand, Pete Shields and Tom Davidson. Mike, Pete and Tom each served as Chairman of Ocean Reef.

But behind the friend so many of us know is an extraordinary story of service. 

On March 9, 1968, while serving in Vietnam, Jack was wounded during an intense battle. Despite his injuries, he assumed command and repeatedly crossed exposed ground under enemy fire to rescue wounded soldiers. His actions that day were credited with saving the lives of a fellow American adviser and 13 allied soldiers and would ultimately earn him our nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. 

Jack has often made the point that Medal of Honor recipients are not supermen. They are ordinary people who, at an extraordinary moment, decide that something must be done. 

This season, Jack and his wife, Sue, will be joining us for the Fine Wine Society in Napa and the 35th Legends Invitational at Pebble Beach. Then in April, we look forward to welcoming them back as we celebrate SEAL Team Ocean Reef. 

So this is not simply a story from Jack's past. It is the beginning of another season of making memories with two very special friends.

The Classic Film Series has become something very special to us, touching so many different parts of the Ocean Reef® community.

35 YEARS OF MAKING MEMORIES
THE LEGENDS INVITATIONAL - AN OCEAN REEF / CARD SOUND CONNECTION

Thirty-five years ago, the Legends Invitational began with a simple idea: bring together wonderful people, great golf and friendships in a very special place. We could never have imagined the memories that would follow.

This November, we return to Pebble Beach for our 35th Legends Invitational. We are especially pleased that Ocean Reef PGA Professionals Clayton Gregory and Louis Fiumara, together with Brette Bryant, PGA Professional at Card Sound Golf Club, will be joining us this year.

This photograph says more about the Legends than we ever could. Golf brought many of us together. Friendship is what has kept us together.

Their participation creates a wonderful connection between two golf traditions that mean so much to our Ocean Reef community - the Bag Room Open and the Legends Invitational. During their time with us, Jay Guarch will sit down with them to capture stories and memories we look forward to sharing with Ocean Reef members in the months ahead.

History of the Bag Room Open

The tournament began in 1977 after Ocean Reef golf professionals debated who was the best professional “on The Reef.” Members encouraged them to settle the question competitively.

Ocean Reef homeowners Ed Aborn and Chick Harbert helped turn the informal challenge into an organized tournament and generated member interest. Harbert—winner of the 1954 PGA Championship and a member of the PGA Hall of Fame—reportedly followed matches in his cart with a rule book and served as referee.

Dan Fabian, then 22 and in his final season at Ocean Reef, became the first official champion. About 20–30 golf carts reportedly followed the inaugural final; modern galleries have exceeded 100 carts.

The competition grew to include professional golf staff from both Ocean Reef Club and Card Sound Golf Club. It is traditionally played as a match-play bracket, with members following the players in golf carts.

A major part of the event is the Golf Mentor Program, founded by the late Stan Ellis. Members are paired with golf-staff mentees to support their professional development, and mentors serve as their caddies during the tournament.

Member donations fund the event. The proceeds are divided among the golf staffs as an end-of-season expression of appreciation, with additional awards or bonuses associated with advancing, birdies and eagles.

Jimmy Watson served as the tournament’s colorful commentator for more than 20 years. He initially announced player backgrounds during the final rounds and later expanded his commentary throughout the competition.

Jack Nicklaus attended or participated in the 1982 Bag Room Open—the Club’s historical article includes a photograph of him at that year’s event.

The tournament celebrated its 50th edition in 2026.  That year also introduced the JJ Award, honoring a longtime Outside Services associate remembered for embodying the friendship and mutual respect between members and employees.

In short, the Bag Room Open evolved from an internal contest to identify Ocean Reef’s best golf professional into a major member-associate tradition centered on competition, mentoring and appreciation for the golf staffs.

The Legends Invitational returns for its 35th year—three iconic courses, unforgettable camaraderie, and a tournament unlike anything else in golf. For three extraordinary days and four memorable nights, participants experience Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and Poppy Hills while hosting clients, friends, and colleagues in one of golf's most celebrated settings along California's spectacular iconic Monterey Peninsula. 

For many companies, the event has become the ultimate setting to host their best clients, reward valued employees, and share a once-in-a-lifetime experience with close friends.
